If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your heart race, you are not alone. Millions of people experience dental anxiety, often leading them to put off essential care until a minor issue becomes a painful emergency.
At Mobile Alabama Dentistry, we believe fear shouldn’t stand between you and a healthy, beautiful smile. Our safe, gentle sedation dentistry options are designed to calm your nerves, eliminate discomfort, and allow you to get the care you need in a state of total relaxation.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Sedation dentistry isn’t just for patients with severe phobias. It is an excellent solution for a wide variety of patient needs. You might be a great candidate if you experience:
- Dental Anxiety or Phobia: Intense nervousness before or during an appointment.
- A Sensitive Gag Reflex: Difficulty keeping your mouth open without discomfort.
- Low Pain Tolerance: Worrying about potential pain or sensitivity during procedures.
- Extensive Treatment Needs: Wanting to combine multiple procedures (like fillings, crowns, or extractions) into a single, highly efficient visit.
- Fear of Needles or Dental Sounds: Anxiety triggered specifically by the sights, sounds, or tools used in an office.
Our Safe and Comfortable Sedation Options
We offer different levels of sedation depending on your comfort level, medical history, and the complexity of your treatment. During your consultation, we will map out the option that feels best for you.
Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)
This is a mild, inhaled sedative mixed with oxygen. Within minutes of breathing it in through a comfortable mask, you will feel a wave of relaxation and light euphoria wash over you.
- The Big Benefit: It wears off almost immediately after we turn off the gas. You can safely drive yourself home and return to your normal routine right after your appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
For a deeper state of relaxation, we can prescribe a safe oral medication (a pill) to take shortly before your procedure. While you will remain fully awake and able to respond to our team, you will feel deeply relaxed and drowsy.
- The Big Benefit: It significantly blunts your awareness of time and the procedure itself. Most patients remember very little, if anything, about their appointment. Note: You will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from the office.
Your Safety and Comfort Are Our Priority
We understand that opting for sedation requires a high level of trust. At Mobile Alabama Dentistry, your safety is non-negotiable.
Our team is highly trained in sedation protocols, and we constantly monitor your vital signs (including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels) throughout your entire visit. We treat every patient with the utmost respect—our office is a strictly judgment-free zone, no matter how long it has been since your last dental visit.
Will I be completely asleep? With both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, you remain awake and conscious. You are simply in a deeply relaxed, peaceful state. If you drift off into a light sleep naturally due to how relaxed you are, a gentle tap on the shoulder is all it takes to wake you up.
