Dental emergencies come in many forms, and knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a big difference in saving a tooth. Here are the most common conditions we treat at Maitre & Crabtree Dental Group:

  • Severe Toothaches & AbscessesPersistent, intense tooth pain or swelling in the gums often indicates an infection or nerve damage. We provide rapid pain relief and procedures like root canal therapy to eliminate infection while saving your natural tooth.
  • Knocked-Out or Dislodged TeethIf a tooth has been completely knocked out due to injury, time is critical. Keep the tooth moist (preferably in a small container of milk or saline) and contact our office immediately—we may be able to re-implant it if treated promptly.
  • Chipped, Cracked, or Broken TeethTrauma or biting down on something hard can fracture a tooth. We offer quick bonding, porcelain crowns, or veneers to restore the tooth’s structural integrity and appearance.
  • Lost or Broken Restorations (Crowns & Fillings)When a crown falls off or a filling pops out, the exposed tooth can become highly sensitive and vulnerable to damage. We can clean, repair, or replace your restoration right away.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries & SwellingCuts, tears, or unexplained swelling in the gums, cheek, or tongue require prompt evaluation to prevent further infection and manage bleeding.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you or a family member experiences a dental emergency, follow these initial steps before coming into our office:

  • Toothache or severe pain: Rinse gently with warm salt water and floss to make sure food isn’t caught around the tooth. You may take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed, but don’t place aspirin directly on the gums.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing or removing any attached tissue. If you can, place it back in the socket and hold it there; if not, keep it in a small container of milk. Call us right away — time matters.
  • Broken or chipped tooth: Save any pieces. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Swelling or abscess: A painful, pimple-like bump on the gums can be an abscess. Rinse with salt water, apply a cold compress in 10-minute intervals, and call us the same day — abscesses can lead to serious infection if not treated promptly.
  • Lost crown or filling: Keep the restoration safe. If a crown came off clean, you can temporarily hold it in place with a small dab of toothpaste or over-the-counter dental cement until you reach our office.
  • Bitten lip or tongue: Clean the area gently and apply ice to reduce swelling.
  • Bleeding: Apply gentle, direct pressure with clean gauze or a damp tea bag. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, get help right away.
  • Something stuck between teeth: Try to remove it gently with dental floss.

Go to the ER instead if: you have a suspected broken jaw, a head injury, trouble breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that won’t stop. Then call us once you’re safe.
